Writing Mechanics and Grammar Skills

From Blank Page to Polished Paper

Does your child stare at a blank page and say, “I don’t know what to write”? Do essays come home with red marks covering every line? Does writing homework turn into a nightly battle that ends in frustration for everyone?

You are not alone. Writing is one of the most common areas where students struggle, and it is also one of the most important skills they will ever develop. Strong writing is not just for English class. It is the foundation of success in every subject, every standardized test, every college application, and every career.

At Coombs Test Prep and Tutoring Hub, we take students from “I can’t write” to “I know exactly how to start.” Our writing program does not just fix grammar mistakes. It teaches students how to think, organize, and express their ideas with clarity and confidence.

What Your Child Will Learn

Our writing program covers the full spectrum of writing mechanics and grammar skills, customized to your child’s grade level and ability:

The Writing Process

Brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing. We teach students that writing is not a single step. It is a process, and every great writer follows it.

Paragraph Structure

Topic sentences, supporting details, transitions, and concluding sentences. Students learn how to build paragraphs that are organized, focused, and complete.

Essay Writing

From five-paragraph essays to argumentative, expository, and narrative writing, we teach students how to structure their ideas, develop a thesis, support it with evidence, and write with a clear, compelling voice.

Grammar and Mechanics

Subject-verb agreement, pronoun usage, punctuation (commas, apostrophes, semicolons, quotation marks), capitalization, sentence fragments, run-on sentences, and verb tenses. We do not just mark errors. We teach students why the rule exists so they can apply it independently

Sentence Variety

Students learn to vary their sentence beginnings, lengths, and structures so their writing sounds polished and mature rather than repetitive and choppy.

Vocabulary in Writing

We help students expand their academic vocabulary and learn how to use precise, descriptive language that elevates their writing from average to impressive.

Who Is This Program For?

Our writing program serves students in grades 3 through 12, from the student who freezes at a blank page and does not know where to start, to the advanced student who writes well but wants to take their skills to the next level. We also prepare students for the writing components of standardized tests including the STAAR writing assessment, the ISEE essay, the PSAT, and the Digital SAT.

The Coombs Difference

Most tutoring programs focus on correcting mistakes after a student has already made them. We focus on teaching students how to avoid them in the first place. Our approach builds the thinking skills behind strong writing so your child does not just improve one assignment. They improve every assignment, in every subject, for the rest of their academic career. Writing is not a talent you are born with. It is a skill you develop. And with the right instruction, every student can become a confident, capable writer.

Every confident writer started somewhere. Let us help your child find their voice. Schedule a complimentary writing diagnostic assessment and see exactly where your child stands today and where we can take them.
