What Is the Digital PSAT?

The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a standardized test administered by College Board. The digital format, introduced in recent years, is shorter and adaptive, meaning the difficulty of the second module adjusts based on how the student performs on the first. It is scored on a scale of 320 to 1520 and tests the same core skills as the Digital SAT: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Mathematics.

Who Should Take the PSAT?

9th Graders

Early exposure to the test format builds familiarity and sets a baseline for future growth

10th Graders

A critical practice year that identifies strengths and weaknesses before the qualifying junior year attempt

11th Graders

THE qualifying year for National Merit. This is the score that counts. Preparation must begin well before October.

The National Merit Scholarship: What Is at Stake

Each year, approximately 1.5 million students enter the National Merit competition through their PSAT scores. About 50,000 receive recognition. Roughly 16,000 are named Semifinalists based on scoring in the top one percent of their state. Around 15,000 advance to Finalist status, and approximately 7,500 receive a National Merit Scholarship. The qualifying score, called the Selection Index, varies by state and typically falls between 207 and 222. In Texas, the cutoff has historically been approximately 215 to 220.

National Merit recognition does not just look impressive on a college application. It can directly reduce or eliminate the cost of a college education. Some participating universities offer full-ride scholarships to National Merit Finalists. The difference between a good PSAT score and a qualifying PSAT score could be worth tens of thousands of dollars over four years.

When Should Preparation Begin?

The ideal timeline is to begin PSAT preparation at least two to three months before the October test date. For juniors targeting National Merit, summer before junior year is the optimal starting point. For 9th and 10th graders, starting early builds a foundation that pays dividends when the qualifying year arrives. The students who score highest are never the ones who crammed the week before. They are the ones who prepared consistently over time.
