The Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is one of the most important assessments for families pursuing private school admission. Unlike the STAAR or SAT, many students have never encountered the ISEE’s format — which makes early, targeted preparation essential.
What the ISEE Tests
The ISEE includes Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematics Achievement sections, plus an Essay. The Verbal section in particular contains question types — like sentence completions — that require a strong academic vocabulary built over time.
When to Start Preparing
Ideally, families should begin ISEE preparation 6 to 12 months before the planned test date. This allows time to address gaps without cramming, build vocabulary systematically, and develop test-taking stamina.
Signs Your Child Is Ready to Begin Prep
Your child reads above grade level, completes homework independently, and can sustain focus for 45 or more minutes at a time. If any of these areas need strengthening first, that is where preparation should start.
