ELA, Reading & Writing Support for Confident Communicators

Strong reading and writing skills open doors in every subject and every stage of life. A student who reads with understanding and writes with clarity does better not only in English class, but in history, science, standardized tests, and one day in college applications and careers. At Coombs Test Prep & Tutoring Hub, our ELA tutoring helps students build these foundational skills through patient, personalized instruction from teachers who genuinely love the subject and know how to make it click.

Every student is different, so we begin by understanding where your child is right now. From there, we build on their strengths while gently closing the gaps, always moving at a pace that keeps them confident and engaged. Whether your student needs to catch up, keep up, or reach further, we meet them exactly where they are and guide them forward.

What Our ELA Tutoring Covers

Our ELA support spans the full range of English Language Arts skills, tailored to each student’s grade level and goals:

ELA Support by Grade Level

What a third grader needs and what a junior needs are not the same thing, so we do not teach them the same way. Here is how our ELA support changes as your student grows.

Elementary ELA Tutoring, Grades 3 through 5

These are the years when reading shifts from learning to read into reading to learn, and that shift catches many capable students off guard. Our elementary sessions build fluency and stamina so longer passages Coombs Test Prep & Tutoring Hub | coombstutoring.com | Page 2 stop feeling overwhelming, then layer in the comprehension skills that make reading productive: finding the main idea, noticing supporting details, and using context to work out unfamiliar words.

On the writing side, we focus on the sentence and the paragraph. Students learn to build a clear topic sentence, support it with detail, and finish a thought completely. Mrs. Coombs holds Texas teaching certification as a Generalist for grades 4 through 8 and in Special Education, with over twenty years of classroom experience, so younger learners are working with someone who has taught these exact skills to this exact age group for decades.

Middle School ELA Tutoring, Grades 6 through 8

Middle school is where writing expectations jump. Students are suddenly asked to hold an argument across several paragraphs, back it with evidence from the text, and sound like they mean it. We teach that structure directly: how to write a thesis, how to choose and introduce a quotation, how to explain why the evidence matters, and how to organize an essay so a reader can follow it.

Reading work deepens alongside it, moving into author’s purpose, tone, and figurative language. Grammar and mechanics get real attention here too, because this is the age when sloppy sentence construction starts costing points. For families looking at private school admission, this is also the natural window to begin ISEE reading and verbal preparation, and we can build that into sessions when it fits your timeline.

High School ELA Tutoring, Grades 9 through 12

High school writing asks students to analyze rather than summarize, and to defend a position rather than describe one. We work on analytical and argumentative essays, literary analysis, and research-based writing, with close attention to the thing that separates a strong essay from an average one: a specific claim, developed with real evidence, in the student’s own voice.

This is also where ELA tutoring and test preparation meet. We support the reading and writing sections of the SAT and PSAT, and we coach college and private school application essays, always as coaching. We help students find what they want to say and say it well. We never write it for them.

Guided by Experienced Educators

Our ELA tutoring is led by experienced educators like Ms. G, who brings nearly two decades of teaching experience and a deep love of language to every session. Students work one-on-one with a caring teacher who not only knows the material, but knows how to help a young learner find their footing and their voice. That combination of expertise and warmth is what helps students grow, not just in skill, but in confidence.

Personalized, One-on-One, and Online

Every session is held live over Zoom, one-on-one, and shaped entirely around your student’s needs. We serve families nationwide, so wherever you are, your child can work with an experienced ELA tutor from the comfort of home. There are no crowded classrooms and no one-size-fits-all worksheets, just focused, personalized attention that helps your student make real progress.
